How to build a habit that sticks: the 66-day method

Updated · 5 min read

Most people try to change too much at once, then give up in the second week. Habits don’t work on willpower; they work on repetition. Here is a simple method that fits a busy day.

How long does a habit really take?

A well-known study from University College London (Lally and colleagues, 2009) followed people building one new daily habit. On average it took 66 days before the habit felt automatic — but it ranged from 18 to 254 days. Simple habits, like a glass of water after waking, came faster than hard ones, like 50 sit-ups.

So the “21 days” you often hear is a starting point, not the finish line. Plan for about two months.

Step 1: Start smaller than you think

Pick one habit and make it so small it’s hard to skip:

  • Not “exercise daily” — “walk for 10 minutes after dinner”.
  • Not “drink more water” — “one glass of water after brushing”.
  • Not “read more” — “read two pages before sleep”.

Step 2: Tie it to something you already do

Use the pattern “After I ___, I will ___.” For example: “After my morning tea, I will do 5 minutes of stretching.” The old habit becomes the reminder for the new one.

Step 3: Track it, and see the streak grow

A tick each day is small proof that you are becoming that person. Keep tracking simple — one tap, at the same time each day. Milestones at 7, 21 and 66 days give you something to aim for.

What if I miss a day?

In the same study, missing a single day did not undo the progress. What hurts is giving up after the miss. The rule: never miss twice. If today went wrong, do the smallest version tomorrow.

A simple first week

  • Day 1: choose one habit and the moment it follows.
  • Day 2–3: do only the tiny version. Stop even if you want more.
  • Day 4–5: set a reminder for the same time daily.
  • Day 6–7: look back at your ticks. Seven days is your first milestone.

Questions

Is 21 days enough to build a habit?

Sometimes for very easy habits, but research found an average of 66 days. Treat 21 days as a milestone and keep going.

How many habits should I start at once?

One, or two very small ones. Add the next only when the first feels easy.

Does a habit tracker app help?

Yes, for most people: a reminder at the right time and a visible streak make it easier to show up daily.
