A simple Indian diet plan for weight loss (veg and non-veg)
Updated · 6 min read
You don’t need imported food or a crash diet to lose weight. Ghar ka khana works — with the right portions, more protein and vegetables, and fewer fried snacks and sugary drinks.
The plate method
At lunch and dinner, fill your plate like this:
- Half: vegetables and salad — sabzi, raita with cucumber, kachumber.
- A quarter: protein — dal, chana, rajma, paneer, curd, eggs, fish or chicken.
- A quarter: grains — 1–2 rotis or a small katori of rice; prefer whole grains and millets.
A sample vegetarian day
- Morning: water, then tea with less sugar and a handful of roasted chana.
- Breakfast: vegetable poha or besan chilla with curd.
- Lunch: 2 rotis, dal, sabzi, salad, a small bowl of curd.
- Evening: fruit, or sprouts chaat.
- Dinner (early and lighter): paneer bhurji or moong dal cheela with sabzi.
A sample non-vegetarian day
- Breakfast: 2 boiled eggs or an egg-white omelette with a roti or toast.
- Lunch: rice (small katori), fish or chicken curry, sabzi, salad.
- Evening: buttermilk and a fruit.
- Dinner: grilled or tandoori chicken with sautéed vegetables and dal.
Small changes that add up
- Cut sugary drinks and packaged juice; have water, chaas or nimbu pani without much sugar.
- Measure oil with a spoon instead of pouring.
- Keep fried snacks for once a week, not every evening.
- Eat slowly and stop when you are about 80% full.
- Walk for 10–15 minutes after meals.
Fasting days (vrat, Navratri)
Vrat food is often fried — sabudana vada, aloo chips, puri. Choose roasted makhana, fruit, curd, samak rice khichdi with vegetables and kuttu roti made with less oil. Drink enough water.
How fast should I lose weight?
Slow and steady lasts — around half a kilo a week is a sensible goal for most adults. If you have diabetes, thyroid, kidney or heart problems, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, plan your diet with a doctor or dietitian.

Can I eat rice and still lose weight?
Yes. Keep the portion small (about a katori), pair it with dal or curry and plenty of vegetables, and watch the total for the day.
How do vegetarians get enough protein?
Add a protein to every meal: dal, chana, rajma, soya, paneer, tofu, curd, milk, sprouts and peanuts.
Is skipping dinner good for weight loss?
It often leads to late-night snacking. An early, lighter dinner usually works better.
